Season 6

The fifth season of MTV's reality TV show The Hills premiered on April 6, 2009 with an order of 10 episodes. Filming for the first half of the season began in January 2009 and ended in April. This season is represented as the last one for Lauren, whose friendship with Heidi was impossible to be made the same again while Spencer was still in the picture but he finally made peace with Lauren before his wedding. This is the first season in which Whitney Port does not appear, as she is the lead in her own spinoff, The City. The back-to-back premiere episodes averaged 3 million viewers each, which is lower than the previous season's premiere.

On April 28, 2009, MTV announced that The Hills will return in the fall with 10 more episodes added to the season.[1] With Lauren Conrad leaving the series to pursue other opportunities, fellow Laguna alum Kristin Cavallari joined the cast for the remainder of the season.

The season's second half premiered on September 29, 2009.[2] It began filming in late May and commenced in late November. On July 16, 2009, Kristin announced that she signed a contract for two additional seasons following the fifth. On December 1, 2009, on The Hills/The City Aftershow, Kristin confirmed there would be a sixth season that was later confirmed to be the final. It began airing on April 27, 2010 and concluded on July 13, 2010. In some country's this second half was promoted and seen as the sixth season, with the last season as the seventh season.

Mid-Season Changes

Back in March 2009, Lauren Conrad confirmed that the fifth season would be her last on the show as she decided to quit and pursue other opportunities.[3] She signed on for ten episodes prior to the announcement of the bonus episodes. After weeks of rumors regarding Laguna alumni Kristin Cavallari replacing Conrad, this was confirmed by both MTV and herself. She started her run on the series in a guest appearance on the mid-finale, then later becoming the starring role for the rest of remaining episodes.

The mid-season finale (Episode 10) aired on May 31, 2009 and Lauren's final appearance, and Kristin's first, airing exactly three years since the show first aired. It was later confirmed that Kristin was signed onto The Hills for two more seasons following the fifth. Shortly afterward it was confirmed that Stephanie & Lo were leaving the series, as well. Despite the confirmations, towards the end of the season, it was confirmed that all cast members were in talks of renewing their contracts. All cast members from the second part of the fifth season (except for Jayde) went on the appear in the sixth and final season.

Lauren is the first cast member in the billing, with her name in a gold shade, followed by Audrina with a blue shade, then Heidi with a pink shade. Since Whitney left the series, and there were no longer four characters billed in the opening, each star received three shots each in the billing instead of the previous two each. The theme song is the same except for Lauren's final episode, "Something Old, Something New..." (Only Natasha Bedingfield and a guitar are heard; no choir could be heard in the background.)

In the season's second half, the opening begins with Kristin driving through Malibu, followed by several shots of the girls. Kristin's name is first in the billing, with her name in a gold shade, followed by Audrina in a blue shade, then Heidi in a pink shade.

Ratings

The 2 back to back premiere episodes both averaged 3 million viewers when the season premiered on April 6, 2009. The season five part finale brought in 2.7 million viewers. This was slightly less than the season premiere yet still higher than the season 4 finale, which garnered roughly 2.5 million viewers.[4] The ratings fell 30% for the season premiere, and only managed to bring in 1.72 million viewers on the 10/20/09 episode.

Script Accusations

Not only were fans surprised to see the "Lauren vs. Heidi" storyline still being covered this season, but some things were purposely left off the camera this season. The way the show depicted Conrad's house departure in January, was as if it was the same time as Heidi and Spencer's wedding in April. So in order for Lauren to discuss the wedding as "the next day" was pre-planned. Stephanie brought Heidi to Lauren's surprise birthday party, and Lauren kicked her off the boat. However, for entertainment purposes, the scene was redone with Conrad accepting Montag and later having a tearful discussion.

On June 18, 2009, Lauren Conrad appeared on The View to discuss the notion that aspects of the series are scripted or planned in advance by producers, and acted out by the cast.[5] She was asked how she felt about the apology she had received from Spencer Pratt involving the sex tape rumours. She responded "To be perfectly honest, I wasn't on the other line of that call...That was filmed and I wasn't on the other end...so I didn't know about it until--So, no, I never did get an apology." When Lauren was still under contract, she had said that Spencer apologized and had it on tape, not mentioning that it was staged.

Kristin Cavallari who joined the cast in the later half of season 5, was asked about joining the cast, she stated "It’s work! And drama sells. I think that’s why they’re bringing me in, because I know what works." And later said: "Its a TV show, why not? You gotta make it fun!" Also in the interview, Kristin stated "I saw Lauren at the wedding, she was really sweet and gave me a big hug, and that's it", when on the show, it was portrayed very differently, as if the two former high school rivals were still feuding.
